[alright, this is pretty...unexpected...and sure, being 'felt' might be a weird way to put it, but at any rate there isn't any offense being taken on this end]
[if only because Jack finds himself too busy feeling a sudden and very sharp pang of guilt almost as soon as he gets through reading the text in its entirety]
oh hey kiddo
has been awhile hasnt it? man im sorry theres been a lot of things going on but i still havent touched base in a bit have i? [with one thing leading to another...and what with how he really hasn't been checking the network as often as he should, recently, in favor of a lot of restless wandering and rainy brooding on deck, and man...] something up?
[The week had been chaotic enough what with people showing up in dangerous spots, the Engineer being put on violent show yesterday, and now the boat just wasn't running right. Nothing was running right, in fact... Most likely thanks to the fact that the Engineer had been so cruelly punished.
It was pretty morbid. Zelos didn't like it at all, but it also said that Compass wasn't exactly the greatest to mess with... And so he'd had a few things on his mind.
But on top of that, the weather getting noticeably hotter every day-- sometimes ten degrees or more, and the power now gone on top of it? He knows that can't be good for Jack. He'd been hoping it would cool down but it certainly didn't look like it was about to anytime soon. So he'll pick up his compass as he leaves his container and send out a message.]
CONTACT: zelos.wilder@compass.net MESSAGE:Yo Jack! What's up my man? I've been thinking; you haven't taken me up on my kind and generous offer to train you yet! What's up with that huh?
Let's meet up today, okay? It'll be fun I promise! Don't keep me waiting!
[...Hm, yes, that would work. And he sent it off just like that. THE PERFECT DISGUISE FOR CONSIDERATION AND CARE.]
[The video feed, when it clicks on at length, starts out wobbly and utterly incoherent as the camera swings around once, twice--brief glimpses of the (very overtly sunny) sky and the deck as viewed from some moderately high point cycle around, blur together, bump down abruptly to a metal facing, and then finally orient to the holder at hand.]
[...As said holder blinks at it blearily at a sideways angle, one cheek pressed to some sort of ground, almost as if he's lying on his side...]
[But, accompanied by another series of camera-wobbling, Jack slowly pulls upright and into a sitting position, back braced against a wall, free hand passing over his eyes once before they refocus on the Compass screen with a frown to accompany them.]
[Altogether, it's no great feat to tell he doesn't exactly look great--]
...Basically--your timing sucks. Is what I was trying to say.
CONTACT: lieutenant.yaha@compass.net MESSAGE:Friendship is hard sometimes, isn't it, Jack? You want people to love and trust you, but ... there is a barrier in the way and you're not sure what to do with it. And so your heart aches. Do you ever have that problem?
[hm, this contact name isn't ringing any bells...but there's still something familiar about this tone even through text, what.....]
uh hi sure pretty good i mean i guess im pretty good , havent felt too bad recently and if itd just stop raining id be golden double that if itd start snowing instead actualy but well [okay no rambling and getting off topic now--] thats still asuming i mean
-- Hello, Jack! This is the Doctor. The eleventh, cool one. Anyway - was hoping to hear from you -- it's been a while, I think, and it's always good to check in, yeah? I haven't any tea, but I can boil water, and it's kind of not really the same thing. Do you even need sustenance? ... Can you take in sustenance?
...
- Well - give me a ring back. Or a text back. Whichever. Right. Looking forward to it.
- Good eveniiiing, Jack! Okay, you might not need sustenance, but do you need to sleep? That's understandable. And would work a lot better, what with your whole... whole... thing. Hm. Well, don't worry about waking me up - I don't sleep. Not intentionally, at least.
Still hoping to chat with you. Really would be grand if you got back to me soon.
[a weak, synthesized voice buzzes out a hello?, which only ramps up the Doctor's anguish. fortunately, he tells Jack all about it.]
Listen to that-- they need a doctor! Except I'm their doctor, but there's no way I'm taking them to me. Have you met me? I wouldn't trust me to care for a dandelion, let alone two turrets.
I've got to do something-- maybe-?
[- one outraged, robotic wait! and a miniexplosion later -]
You're probably out enjoying the weather or whatever, but have you checked out the newspaper lately? Not that one from last week with the creepy news... The shop ads!
[And when he doesn't get a reply fast enough to that (read: immediately), he'll add more and send it, too.]
Not just the shop ads, but it looks like there are some shops around that I didn't really notice before. They definitely weren't able to be touched before, that's for sure.
jack? hey look i i'm probably the last person you want to see rn but i didn't want to just you know leave you hanging . . . i'm really sorry. for everything. i don't know what happened and how or why but i'm not going to try and justify it because i hurt you i attacked and HURT you something like that doesn't deserve a justification or anything really friends don't attack friends that's the truth even if it was some weird curse or whatever i should have fought it like you told me to i have a job back home. i protect my friends because they're my family if i can't do that i don't know how low that even is really low. lower than dirt. i'm sorry and i understand if you don't you know that i shouldn't even be typing this i should be talking to you but i figured i don't know where you are or how you feel about it so you can just jump this if you want. i don't know how many times i can say i'm sorry and i know it won't change anything but i'm sorry. i wanted to see you but that's your call if you want to bye. and thanks for reading all this. and thanks for doing what you could.
[The text pops in midflight, for Jack, the vibrating in his hoodie pocket drawing him down to a rooftop after a couple of minutes. ...Which is the only reason there's a bit of a delay in his reply at all, really--because as soon as Jack catches a glimpse of the sender, he's practically scrabbling at the reply button, with a sharp surge of relief to accompany it.]
[He'd been meaning to track down Enma eventually pretty soon, after all--he'd been trying to avoid too much contact out of deference, after their encounter last week, knowing that his own presence hadn't exactly been helping anybody at the time--but now...]
[This is a better response than he could have ever hoped for, really.]
[He prods at the keyboard a few times before remembering that--oh, right, with these kinds of messages, he could....like a phone, sort of? Leaving messages? It's an idea Jack's familiar enough with, but actually trying it is a bit of a new experience involving some poking around at different buttons. Eventually, though:]
--thing should be--oh. [A satisfied huff, at the other end of the feed, and then Jack speaks up properly.] Hey, kiddo! S'great to be hearing back from you, I was really--it's good to know you're okay, now.
[Wow that sure tapered off pretty awkwardly...and there's a small pause, after that, as Jack reads over the text again. Sending a message like this feels kind of weird--different, in a disarming sort of way that he hadn't quite expected--and there's figuring out how to word this right...]
[But at least the pause doesn't stretch on for too long, and when he speaks up again his voice is warm.]
Seriously though, you don't need to worry, or--apologize for anything, okay? It wasn't your fault. Not gonna be doing anybody much good blaming yourself for something you couldn't exactly help. --Everybody'll mess up on a job like that sometimes, I understand. [That resonates pretty strongly, after all--that Enma should have the duty of protecting others back home too. It's a pang of sympathy, because it's hard, and he knows--but still, actually figuring out how to say it...]
[He settles for a middle ground instead, in the meantime.]
Really, it's up to you whether you'd wanna meet up or not, but--I'd definitely like to see you, if we could. You're right, we should talk it out properly. I'll be, uh... [A few shifting sounds, and a strain of stronger wind whistling through speakers, as Jack leaps up onto a higher rooftop on an adjacent building to get a better look around at his location.] I'm pretty close to the outside of campus, right now, so I could hang around here for awhile. See you soon, huh?
[Beat, beat, and then--figuring that's about all there is to say for now--click.]
[Normally Zelos would go straight to a text post. It was easy to hide his own emotions while poking at others and the replies were instant enough-- but this time is different. This time he woke up in space, spent a good few minutes taking in everything from the computer errors to his company to what it meant, and then went for his pocket watch to contact a few friends.
He didn't have time for text.
Even still, he can at least pull off looking moderately neutral when his face shows up in the message he sends. There's a bit of background noise what with the group of people figuring things out and the computer flashing behind him with error messages, but his voice comes across clear enough.]
[It's a minute or so of delay before Zelos gets a response to his message; this is definitely one of the Compass's more unpleasant curveballs, in Jack's opinion, and this soon into things he's still sort of...trying to get a grip on things.]
[And it's hard.]
[At the very least he's incrementally calmer now than he had been off the bat, first waking up to completely unfamiliar surroundings--and Jack doesn't have the presence of mind to switch to text himself, much as it might have been preferable. And better for all parties, maybe...but by the time the notion occurs Jack's already blinking at the video feed for a few moments, trying to piece back together a reply. He's in a crouch, for the time being, with his back against one of the metallic walls of the flight lounge--notably pale, even for him.]
[And the feed quivers slightly in his hands before Jack sets it on the more stable support of his knees.]
Yeah, I'm--yeah. In the ship. ...Spaceship. We're in-- [A short breath, and then Jack shakes his head shortly almost to himself. Outer space is what he wants to say, but just thinking about it is almost enough to set off the terrifying vertigo again. And so, instead--] --it's, someplace called a flight lounge, over here? From what I'm hearing. There's...broken stuff that needs fixing, I guess.
[But even through he worst sort of preoccupation, concern manages to fight its way through anyway.]
Are you okay? S'that where the others are, over there? There's only a handful of people over here...

hey
look i
i'm probably the last person you want to see rn but i didn't want to just
you know
leave you hanging
. . . i'm really sorry. for everything.
i don't know what happened and how or why but i'm not going to try and justify it
because i hurt you
i attacked and HURT you
something like that doesn't deserve a justification or anything really
friends don't attack friends that's the truth
even if it was some weird curse or whatever i should have fought it like you told me to
i have a job back home.
i protect my friends because they're my family
if i can't do that i don't know how low that even is
really low.
lower than dirt.
i'm sorry and i understand if you don't
you know
that
i shouldn't even be typing this i should be talking to you
but i figured
i don't know where you are or how you feel about it so you can just jump this if you want.
i don't know how many times i can say i'm sorry and i know it won't change anything
but i'm sorry.
i wanted to see you but that's your call if you want to
bye. and thanks for reading all this.
